Breaking the Ice x 2

We were thrilled to have two ice breaker speeches on October 14th from new members, Chris and Sylvia. An ice breaker is the first speech that a new member gives, when the speaker introduced herself or himself to the rest of the club. We learned that Chris was a top triple jumper in his early years and he shared about his journey from PD to IT. We learned that Sylvia is an innovative business owner and passionate writer.

Tonight’s meeting was chaired by Eva, who introduced a them of “Sunshine and Beaches”. We went around the room and each spoke for approximately 45 seconds about the theme. The members explored the theme in very  different ways including:

  • Karen, who has declared the spring as the season of picnics
  • Scott R who created an impromptu poem
  • Paul who reminisced about a river in Cooma
  • David who shared about the long, shallow pebbly beaches in the UK
  • Eva who spoke about North Beach in Christchurch

Our president, Scott, shared how his Toastmasters skills helped him immensely when he delivered his own mother’s eulogy several weeks ago.

Louise delivered a touching toast to “Amazing Grace”, her mother who had lived the essence of her name and had recently passed.

Jeff acted as our grammarian and chose the word “inquire” – a verb meaning to seek information.

And Therese gave a humorous explanation of the timer’s role and how she would be playing her part.

Table Topics was hosted by Filimon, who experimented with a different approach. Rather than asking each member a question, we explored storytelling by building on the previous speaker’s ideas.
