We had an excited group of Toastmasters at St Kieran’s Manly Vale on July 8th when we held our first in-person meeting in four months!
The membership had voted to alternate having in-person and Zoom meetings. We had 14 members attend.
Something New for Fun
We opened with a warm-up where each member talked for 45 seconds about something new they’d started doing for fun during the iso period.
Eva horrified my by sharing she’d started watching horror movies! Kesh started Brazilian Jiu jitsu online. Kieron has been writing a book. Paul has been learning Russian via Skype. And I’ve discovered Barre!
The World’s Toughest Race
We were thrilled to welcome back a past president, David, who presented a prepared speech on his time spent as a checkpoint volunteer for the Eco Challenge in Fiji. He shared stunning photos and exciting stories about his experiences and we are all counting down the days until the show begins!
Kieron then gave an impromptu speech about the book he is working on. He is passionate about studying people who have contributed to our understanding of the human condition over time. Humankind in general – not just a race or a tribe. He observed, “If only we could be a bit kinder to each other, life would be better.”
Table Topics with a Twist
We did something different with Table Topics this week. Table Topics is the session when we practice impromptu speaking. Each member is given a topic and gets to speak about that topic for 1-2 minutes.
For this session, Karen kicked it off by giving Filimon a quote from Tony Robbins, “It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently.” Once Filimon had his turn, he chose a topic for Maxim, who then chose a topic for Kieron and so on.
At times we got a bit discombobulated, which is appropriate since that was the word of the night selected by our grammarian, Jeff.
I hope these meeting summaries give you a flavour of what our meetings and culture are like at St Kieran’s Manly Vale. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. We’d love to have you as our guest. Simply email our VP Membership, Eva Meagher, for more details. Link is on our home page or email toastmastersmanlyvale at outlook dot com
